Phellodendron amurense, also known as Amur cork tree, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, the bark (known as Huang Bai) is considered one of the "three yellows" and is traditionally believed to clear heat and dampness, particularly from the lower body, which includes the kidney and bladder meridians. Huang Bai is often prescribed in herbal formulas intended to address kidney yin deficiency or damp-heat in the lower burner (an area encompassing the kidneys and urinary tract as understood in TCM theory). However, these indications are based on traditional concepts and do not directly correspond to biomedical understanding of kidney function.

From a scientific perspective, most research on Phellodendron amurense focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-tumor properties due to its alkaloid content (notably berberine and palmatine). There is limited and indirect evidence from animal studies suggesting potential renal protective effects, but robust clinical trials in humans evaluating its efficacy for kidney health are lacking. Therefore, while its use for supporting kidney function is well-established in traditional herbal medicine, scientific validation for these specific effects is minimal. Most support for kidney health derives from TCM theory rather than modern biomedical research.
