Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa) is a key herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), most notably used to support the “Kidney” system, which in TCM encompasses aspects of reproductive health, vitality, and aging as well as the actual organ system. Classic formulas such as Liu Wei Di Huang Wan use rehmannia as a principal ingredient, and it is commonly prescribed for symptoms interpreted as “Kidney Yin deficiency,” including fatigue, lower back pain, tinnitus, and night sweats.
Scientific research into rehmannia’s direct effects on the kidney organs is limited. Some animal studies suggest potential nephroprotective effects, such as reducing markers of kidney damage or inflammation, but these results have not been robustly demonstrated in human clinical trials. Most available evidence supporting rehmannia’s use for the kidneys comes from traditional practice and longstanding usage, rather than from rigorous modern scientific validation. Therefore, the use of rehmannia to support the kidney system is justified primarily by tradition, with some preliminary but inconclusive scientific data.
