Sea salt has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in some forms of traditional Chinese medicine and other folk practices, to "support" kidney health and balance bodily fluids. Historically, salt (including sea salt) was considered important for maintaining electrolyte balance and preventing dehydration, both of which are vital for kidney function. However, these uses were based more on empirical observations and beliefs rather than systematic scientific study. In modern nutrition and medical science, while sodium (from any salt) is recognized as essential for fluid and electrolyte balance, excessive salt intake is known to be harmful to kidney health, particularly in individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions or hypertension.
Current scientific consensus does not support the idea that consuming additional sea salt specifically "supports" kidney function in healthy individuals. Instead, high salt intake is associated with increased risk for kidney disease, hypertension, and cardiovascular problems. There is no unique property of sea salt, compared to other dietary salts, that confers special benefits to the kidneys. Thus, while the traditional use exists, scientific evidence for its efficacy in supporting the kidney body system is minimal.
