Tofu is traditionally used in Chinese medicine and some other East Asian healing systems as a food that can support kidney health. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), tofu is classified as a cooling and moistening food, thought to nourish Yin and support the function of the Kidneys, especially when there is a deficiency of Yin or bodily fluids. Tofu is made from soybeans, which are believed to have properties that benefit the kidneys and help balance bodily systems. However, these uses are rooted in traditional frameworks rather than modern biomedical science.
From a scientific standpoint, there is limited direct evidence linking tofu consumption specifically to improved kidney health in the general population. Some studies suggest that plant-based proteins like tofu may be less taxing on kidneys compared to animal proteins, especially in people with chronic kidney disease, but the evidence is not robust or kidney-specific for the general population.
