Evidence supporting the use of: Wax Gourd
For the body system: Kidneys
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Wax gourd (Benincasa hispida), also known as ash gourd or winter melon, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these traditions, wax gourd is believed to have cooling, diuretic, and detoxifying properties. It is often recommended to support kidney health and urinary function, primarily due to its high water content and perceived ability to promote urination and help flush out toxins. In Ayurveda, it is thought to pacify the pitta dosha and is sometimes used in formulations aimed at relieving urinary tract irritation or supporting kidney function.
However, the scientific evidence supporting the use of wax gourd specifically for kidney health is limited. Modern research has primarily focused on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic benefits, with only indirect relevance to kidney support. Some animal studies suggest potential nephroprotective effects due to its antioxidant properties, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while wax gourd is traditionally used to support the kidneys, scientific validation for these specific uses remains insufficient.
