Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine across various cultures, including European, Native American, and Asian systems. Historically, yarrow has been used for a range of ailments, most notably for its effects on wounds, digestion, and inflammation. Its use specifically for supporting the kidneys is less prominent but can be traced to some traditional European and folk herbal practices, where yarrow was included in diuretic formulas believed to "cleanse" the urinary tract and support kidney function.
However, the evidence for yarrow’s direct benefits to the kidneys is weak. There are some traditional references to its use as a mild diuretic—helping increase urine output—which may indirectly support kidney function by promoting fluid elimination. The plant contains flavonoids and other phytochemicals that may have mild anti-inflammatory effects, but clinical studies demonstrating direct kidney support or protection are lacking.
Modern scientific research has focused more on yarrow’s anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and wound-healing properties, with little direct investigation into nephroprotective (kidney-protecting) effects. As such, its reputation as a kidney-supportive herb is based mostly on traditional diuretic use, and not on robust scientific validation. Therefore, while there is a traditional basis for its inclusion in kidney or urinary formulas, the strength of evidence is limited.
