Evidence supporting the use of: Chamomile
For the health condition: Labor and Delivery
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla or Chamaemelum nobile) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, including applications related to labor and delivery. Traditional midwifery and herbal practices in various cultures have used chamomile as a mild sedative and muscle relaxant, purportedly to help calm the mother, relieve anxiety, soothe digestive upsets, and sometimes to ease muscle tension during labor. Chamomile tea or extracts have been given to women to promote relaxation before and during labor, and sometimes to encourage sleep if labor is prolonged. However, these uses are largely based on anecdotal evidence and longstanding custom rather than rigorous scientific study.
Modern scientific evidence directly supporting chamomile for labor induction, pain management, or shortening the duration of labor is extremely limited. While chamomile contains compounds such as apigenin that have mild calming effects, there is no substantial clinical data demonstrating its effectiveness or safety specifically for labor and delivery outcomes. Moreover, some safety concerns exist with the use of herbal remedies during pregnancy and labor, especially due to possible allergic reactions or interactions with medications. In summary, chamomile’s use in labor and delivery is primarily justified by tradition, with minimal scientific validation.
