Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bifidobacterium species are commonly used as probiotics for supporting digestive health, including addressing lactose intolerance. The scientific rationale centers on the ability of various Bifidobacterium strains to produce β-galactosidase, the enzyme responsible for hydrolyzing lactose into glucose and galactose. In individuals with lactose intolerance, who have reduced endogenous lactase activity, supplementation with Bifidobacterium can aid in the digestion of dietary lactose, potentially alleviating gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, cramps, and diarrhea.

Human clinical studies provide moderate evidence for this effect. Several randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that consumption of fermented dairy products containing Bifidobacterium (such as yogurt) leads to improved lactose digestion and a reduction in symptoms compared to non-fermented dairy or placebo. A 2015 meta-analysis (Savaiano & Hutkins, 2015) concluded that probiotics, particularly Bifidobacterium species, can modestly enhance lactose digestion and reduce symptoms in lactose-intolerant individuals, although the magnitude of benefit varies depending on the strain and dose.

Despite positive findings, the evidence is not uniformly strong. Benefits are more pronounced when Bifidobacterium is delivered in a dairy matrix, possibly due to synergistic effects. Standalone probiotic supplements may be less effective than fermented foods. Overall, the scientific evidence is moderate (rating 3), and ongoing research is refining which strains and dosages are most effective for lactose intolerance.
