Galactosidase—specifically, the enzyme beta-galactosidase (commonly known as lactase)—is scientifically validated for use in managing lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance is a condition characterized by the inability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products, due to insufficient endogenous lactase production in the small intestine.

Supplemental beta-galactosidase/lactase is used to break down lactose into glucose and galactose, which are easily absorbed by the gut. Numerous clinical studies have shown that oral administration of lactase enzyme preparations, either directly or in pre-treated dairy products, significantly reduces symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, flatulence, and diarrhea in lactose-intolerant individuals. A 2010 meta-analysis in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics concluded that lactase supplements effectively reduce lactose intolerance symptoms in most patients.

The use of lactase is supported by the recommendations of clinical guidelines, including those from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other gastroenterological societies. Over-the-counter lactase enzyme tablets and drops are widely available and used by patients to enable the consumption of dairy products without discomfort.

In summary, the use of galactosidase/lactase for lactose intolerance is strongly supported by robust scientific evidence, with efficacy demonstrated in multiple randomized controlled trials and recognized in clinical practice guidelines.
