Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus (unspecified)
For the health condition: Lactose Intolerance
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Lactobacillus species have been studied for their potential to aid in lactose digestion and alleviate symptoms of lactose intolerance. This benefit is primarily attributed to certain strains’ ability to produce the enzyme β-galactosidase (lactase), which breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose, sugars that are more easily absorbed in the human gut. Consumption of fermented dairy products containing live Lactobacillus (such as yogurt) has been shown to improve lactose tolerance in some individuals. Multiple clinical trials and meta-analyses suggest that specific probiotic strains, including Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus, can reduce symptoms such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea in lactose-intolerant subjects when consumed regularly.
However, not all Lactobacillus species or strains possess this ability, and the degree of benefit can vary. The strongest evidence supports fermented dairy products rather than generic probiotic supplements. The effect is generally modest and most pronounced in individuals with mild to moderate lactose intolerance. Therefore, while there is scientific support (primarily for certain strains and settings), the evidence does not extend to all Lactobacillus products or supplements. Further research is needed to identify the most effective strains and formulations, but the use of specific Lactobacillus strains for lactose intolerance does have a valid scientific basis.
