Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) has been traditionally used in Japanese and some East Asian herbal medicine systems, mainly for general health, longevity, and "rejuvenation" rather than for specific support of the large intestine or colon. Some traditional uses include promoting digestion and regularity, which are indirectly related to colon health. These historical uses are typically based on folk medicine practices and not on rigorous scientific evaluation. In traditional Japanese folk medicine, ashitaba tea or leaves are sometimes consumed for their "cleansing" properties, which may be interpreted as a mild laxative effect or support for bowel function. However, direct references to ashitaba specifically supporting the colon or treating colon-specific ailments are limited in the traditional literature.

On the scientific side, there is emerging but still limited research into ashitaba's bioactive compounds (such as chalcones), which may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest these compounds can impact gut health, but there is no direct clinical evidence showing ashitaba benefits the human large intestine or colon specifically. Thus, the traditional use for general digestive health can be acknowledged, but scientific substantiation for targeted colon support is currently lacking.
