Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Humic acid has been traditionally used in various folk medicines, but there is some emerging scientific evidence that supports its potential benefits for the large intestine (colon). Humic substances, including humic acid, are natural organic compounds derived from the decomposition of plant material and are found in soil, peat, and water. Recent studies have explored their effects on gut health, particularly their possible role in modulating the gut microbiota and supporting intestinal barrier function. Some animal studies suggest that humic acid can decrease intestinal inflammation, enhance nutrient absorption, and improve the integrity of the intestinal mucosa. These effects are believed to be due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.

However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically examining humic acid’s effects on colon health are limited. Most available studies are preclinical or involve small sample sizes, making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions about efficacy and safety. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence supporting humic acid’s use for colon health—such as helping maintain mucosal integrity and modulating microbial populations—the overall level of evidence remains modest (rated 2/5). Further well-designed human studies are necessary to substantiate its benefits and determine appropriate usage in supporting large intestine health.
