Isomalto-oligosaccharide (IMO) is a type of prebiotic fiber that resists digestion in the small intestine and reaches the large intestine (colon), where it is fermented by beneficial gut bacteria. Scientific studies have demonstrated that IMOs can selectively stimulate the growth and activity of probiotic bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species in the colon. This fermentation process produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which have various health benefits for the colon, including supporting the integrity of the colonic mucosa and contributing to anti-inflammatory effects.
Several clinical trials and in vitro studies support the use of IMO for improving gut microbiota composition and increasing stool frequency, suggesting benefits for digestive health and bowel regularity. However, some studies indicate that IMOs are partially digestible and may not be as potent as other prebiotics like inulin or fructooligosaccharides. While the evidence is not as robust or consistent as for some other prebiotics, there is enough scientific validation to support the use of IMO for large intestine (colon) health.
