Anemarrhena asphodeloides (commonly referred to as Anemarrhena) is an herb widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, the rhizome known as "Zhi Mu" has been utilized for thousands of years, primarily to "clear heat" and "nourish yin." Laryngitis, which often presents with symptoms of sore throat, hoarseness, and loss of voice, is sometimes interpreted in TCM as being caused by "heat" or "dryness" affecting the throat and lungs.
Traditional formulas for sore throat, hoarseness, and laryngitis occasionally include Anemarrhena, especially when there are signs of "internal heat." However, the use of Anemarrhena for laryngitis is based on these traditional concepts rather than modern biomedical evidence. Scientific studies have investigated some of Anemarrhena’s active constituents, such as mangiferin, for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. These properties could theoretically be beneficial for laryngitis, but there is a lack of direct clinical research or trials specifically evaluating Anemarrhena for laryngitis in humans.
In summary, Anemarrhena is used for laryngitis primarily due to its traditional role in TCM, not because of robust scientific validation. The evidence supporting its use for this specific indication is based on longstanding historical practice, with limited scientific studies addressing only general anti-inflammatory properties rather than specific effects in laryngitis.
