Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Baphicacanthus cusia (commonly known as Qing Dai or Strobilanthes cusia) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for conditions involving inflammation and infection, particularly of the throat and respiratory tract. In TCM, Qing Dai is often used in herbal formulas to "clear heat" and "detoxify," which are concepts interpreted as reducing inflammation and fighting infection. Laryngitis, characterized by inflammation of the larynx, fits within these traditional indications, and thus Baphicacanthus cusia has been used to support or treat this condition based largely on empirical and historical use.

However, direct scientific evidence for the efficacy of Baphicacanthus cusia specifically in the treatment of laryngitis is limited. Some pharmacological studies have shown that extracts from the plant possess anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial activities in vitro and in animal models, which may provide a plausible rationale for its traditional use in throat infections and inflammations. Nevertheless, there are no high-quality clinical trials directly evaluating its effectiveness for laryngitis in humans. As such, its use for laryngitis is primarily justified by tradition, with minimal scientific validation at present. Further research would be required to confirm its clinical efficacy and safety for this specific indication.
