Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has a longstanding history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is often regarded as a tonic for promoting general health and longevity. In traditional practices, reishi has been used to support the immune system, reduce inflammation, and soothe irritated tissues, which may have led to its occasional application for throat-related ailments such as laryngitis. Laryngitis is typically characterized by inflammation of the larynx, often resulting in hoarseness or loss of voice. The rationale for reishi’s use in this context is primarily based on its reputed anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties described in historical texts and folk medicine.

However, while there is some laboratory and preclinical evidence suggesting reishi’s anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting effects, there is currently very limited direct scientific evidence specifically validating its use for laryngitis in humans. No high-quality clinical trials have assessed reishi mushroom for the treatment or support of laryngitis symptoms. Most references to its use for this condition come from traditional or anecdotal sources. Therefore, while its use for laryngitis is justified by tradition, the overall evidence—especially modern clinical evidence—remains weak and is rated as low (1 out of 5).
