Evidence supporting the use of: Sagebrush
For the health condition: Laryngitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) has a history of use in traditional Native American and folk medicine for a variety of respiratory ailments, including sore throats and laryngitis. The plant has been employed in the form of teas, infusions, or steam inhalations to soothe throat irritation and help alleviate symptoms associated with laryngitis. However, this use is rooted primarily in tradition rather than robust scientific validation. There is little to no clinical research specifically examining the efficacy of sagebrush for laryngitis. Some in vitro studies have indicated that sagebrush contains compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, such as volatile oils and flavonoids, but these findings have not been directly correlated with effectiveness in treating laryngitis in humans. Overall, while sagebrush’s traditional use for throat complaints is documented, there is scant scientific evidence to support its use for laryngitis specifically. As such, reliance on sagebrush for laryngitis should be approached with caution, and individuals should consult healthcare professionals for evidence-based therapies.
