For the health condition: Laryngitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sundew (Drosera species) has a longstanding presence in traditional herbal medicine, especially within European practices, for the treatment of respiratory ailments such as coughs, bronchitis, and laryngitis. The plant’s mucilage and various compounds—most notably plumbagin and flavonoids—were historically valued for their purported antitussive (cough-suppressing), spasmolytic, and anti-inflammatory properties. In the context of laryngitis, sundew was typically incorporated into cough syrups or teas to soothe throat irritation and reduce inflammation.
However, scientific studies supporting its efficacy are limited. A few in vitro and animal studies have suggested antitussive and mild anti-inflammatory effects of certain Drosera extracts, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Most references to sundew’s benefits for laryngitis are found in ethnobotanical literature and traditional pharmacopeias rather than in modern evidence-based sources. Thus, the use of sundew for laryngitis remains primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation.
