Evidence supporting the use of: Vervain
For the health condition: Laryngitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Vervain (Verbena officinalis and related species) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, including for ailments affecting the throat and mouth such as laryngitis. Historical texts and folk traditions in Europe and Asia have cited Vervain as a remedy for sore throats, hoarseness, and voice loss. The plant was often prepared as an infusion or gargle for these purposes. However, the evidence supporting its efficacy for laryngitis is almost exclusively anecdotal and based on traditional usage rather than scientific research. Modern clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically evaluating Vervain’s effects on laryngitis or inflammation of the larynx are lacking. Some laboratory studies suggest that Vervain contains compounds with mild anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial effects, but these findings have not been directly linked to the treatment of laryngitis in humans. As such, its use for this condition remains rooted in tradition, with only very limited scientific rationale and no robust evidence base.
