Psyllium (Plantago ovata), often called "Asian Psyllium," is a soluble fiber commonly used as a bulk-forming laxative. Its role in supporting "Leaky Gut Syndrome" (increased intestinal permeability) is primarily based on its well-documented effects on gut health and mucosal barrier function, though direct evidence specific to "Leaky Gut Syndrome" in humans is limited.

Scientific studies have shown that psyllium can modulate the gut microbiota, increase the production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and improve stool consistency. Animal and in vitro studies suggest that psyllium may help maintain or improve the integrity of the gut mucosal barrier by promoting mucus production and reducing inflammation. For example, some research indicates that psyllium supplementation can reduce markers of inflammation and intestinal permeability in experimental models.

However, clinical trials in humans specifically targeting leaky gut (increased intestinal permeability) are scarce. Most human studies focus on constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and general digestive health. There is some indirect evidence that psyllium may help maintain gut barrier integrity, but the evidence is not robust or specific to "Leaky Gut Syndrome" as a distinct clinical diagnosis. Thus, the use of psyllium for leaky gut is supported by some scientific rationale and preclinical evidence, but high-quality clinical validation is lacking.
