Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bacteria, specifically in the form of probiotic supplements, are used to support or treat "Leaky Gut Syndrome" (increased intestinal permeability). The scientific foundation for this use is moderate but not definitive. Several studies indicate that specific probiotic strains can positively influence gut barrier function, reduce intestinal permeability, and modulate inflammation in both animal models and some human trials. For example, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Bifidobacterium species have shown the ability to enhance tight junction integrity in vitro and in vivo. Some human studies in conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease, which are associated with altered gut permeability, report improvements with probiotics, but these findings do not universally translate to "Leaky Gut Syndrome" as a distinct diagnosis, which remains somewhat controversial in mainstream medicine. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggest probiotics may benefit gut barrier function, but results are strain-specific and sometimes inconsistent. There is still a need for larger, well-controlled clinical trials directly targeting increased intestinal permeability in humans. Thus, the scientific evidence is promising but incomplete, justifying a moderate rating.
