Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium breve is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its effects on gut health, including its potential role in managing Leaky Gut Syndrome (also known as increased intestinal permeability). While "Leaky Gut Syndrome" is not an officially recognized medical diagnosis, there is growing scientific interest in the role of intestinal barrier function and the microbiome in various gastrointestinal and systemic disorders. Several preclinical (animal and cell culture) studies have shown that B. breve can enhance intestinal barrier integrity by upregulating tight junction proteins, reducing inflammation, and modulating the immune response. For example, some research in mice has demonstrated that supplementation with B. breve can reduce intestinal permeability and protect against chemically-induced gut barrier damage. Human studies are limited, but there is preliminary evidence that certain Bifidobacterium strains, including B. breve, may benefit gut barrier function in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), conditions associated with increased intestinal permeability. However, direct clinical trials in people specifically diagnosed with "Leaky Gut Syndrome" are lacking, and the evidence remains preliminary. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some supporting data, the overall evidence supporting the use of Bifidobacterium breve specifically for Leaky Gut Syndrome is limited and warrants further investigation.
