Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bifidobacterium species are widely studied probiotics with a role in gut health, including potential support for conditions described as "Leaky Gut Syndrome" (LGS), which refers to increased intestinal permeability. While LGS is not an officially recognized medical diagnosis, increased intestinal permeability is a measurable phenomenon seen in certain diseases (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease). Scientific studies, mostly in animal models and some human trials, have shown that various Bifidobacterium strains can enhance tight junction integrity in the gut epithelium, reduce inflammation, and modulate the gut microbiota composition, all of which are relevant to gut barrier function.

For example, research has demonstrated that Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium lactis supplementation can decrease markers of gut permeability and inflammation in animal models and in some human studies involving irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, robust clinical trials specifically targeting "Leaky Gut Syndrome" in otherwise healthy individuals are limited, and many studies are small or preliminary. Overall, while there is a plausible scientific rationale and moderate evidence that Bifidobacterium may help support gut barrier function, the evidence is not yet strong or specific enough for broad clinical recommendations for LGS outside of research or specific disease contexts.
