Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Isomaltooligosaccharide (IMO) is a prebiotic dietary fiber commonly used to support gut health by promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. The rationale for its use in conditions like Leaky Gut Syndrome (also known as increased intestinal permeability) is largely based on its prebiotic effects, which can influence gut microbiota composition and intestinal barrier function. Some animal and in vitro studies have shown that prebiotics, including IMO, can help improve gut barrier integrity by increasing the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate, which are known to support the health of intestinal epithelial cells and tight junction proteins. However, direct clinical evidence in humans specifically addressing IMO's efficacy in treating or supporting Leaky Gut Syndrome is currently limited. Most available studies focus on general gut health, changes in microbiota, or surrogate markers rather than direct measures of intestinal permeability in humans with Leaky Gut Syndrome. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence supporting the use of IMO for gut barrier function, well-controlled human clinical trials specifically addressing Leaky Gut Syndrome are lacking. The overall strength of evidence supporting its use for this particular condition is currently low to moderate.
