Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Montmorillonite, a type of clay, has been traditionally used for gastrointestinal issues, particularly in folk and alternative medicine systems. Its use for “leaky gut syndrome” specifically is not rooted in robust scientific research, but rather in anecdotal reports and traditional practices that claim it soothes the gut lining by adsorbing toxins, pathogens, and irritants in the digestive tract. Some animal studies and in vitro research suggest montmorillonite can bind to certain bacteria and toxins, helping to reduce their absorption, but direct evidence for repairing intestinal permeability or treating leaky gut syndrome in humans is lacking. No well-conducted clinical trials exist demonstrating its efficacy for this condition. Thus, while traditional and alternative health practitioners may recommend montmorillonite for gut support, its use for leaky gut syndrome is not substantiated by strong scientific data; the evidence base is limited and largely circumstantial.
