Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Acacia, particularly Acacia senegal (source of gum arabic), has a long history of traditional use in the management of lesions, wounds, and sores. Historical texts and ethnobotanical records describe the topical application of acacia gum or extracts to help soothe and protect skin lesions. The rationale behind its use is primarily due to its demulcent and protective properties, forming a barrier that may reduce irritation and promote healing. Additionally, some traditional medicinal systems, such as those in Africa and the Middle East, have employed acacia preparations for oral ulcers and minor skin injuries.

However, while these traditional uses are well documented, scientific validation is limited. A few in vitro studies suggest that acacia gum exhibits mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, which could theoretically support wound healing, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while acacia's use for lesions is grounded in tradition and some preliminary laboratory evidence, there is insufficient high-quality scientific data to fully endorse its efficacy for this purpose.
