Evidence supporting the use of: Alpha hydroxy acids
For the health condition: Lesions
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), such as glycolic acid and lactic acid, are scientifically validated for use in treating certain types of skin lesions, particularly those related to actinic keratoses, acne, and superficial scars. AHAs function as chemical exfoliants, promoting the shedding of the stratum corneum and enhancing cell turnover. This mechanism helps in the improvement of texture and appearance of the skin and supports the resolution of superficial lesions.
Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of AHAs in the treatment of acne lesions, with improvements in both comedonal and inflammatory acne. For actinic keratoses, superficial chemical peels containing AHAs have shown moderate efficacy in reducing lesion count and improving overall skin appearance, although they are considered less effective than other modalities like cryotherapy or topical 5-fluorouracil for this use. Furthermore, AHAs are widely used in dermatology for the management of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and superficial scars due to their ability to promote epidermal remodeling.
The evidence, however, is strongest for superficial lesions; deeper or malignant lesions are not typically treated with AHAs. Overall, the use of AHAs for treating certain types of skin lesions is supported by moderate scientific evidence, with numerous dermatological guidelines and peer-reviewed studies documenting their clinical benefits and safety profile when used appropriately.
