Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Euryale seed, also known as fox nut or "makhana," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In TCM, Euryale seed (Euryale ferox) is considered to have astringent properties and is commonly prescribed to "stabilize the kidney" and "secure essence." It is used in formulas intended to treat conditions characterized by excessive or abnormal vaginal discharge, such as leucorrhea. The traditional rationale is that its astringent and tonifying effects can help reduce pathological discharges and strengthen the body's integrity. Similarly, Ayurvedic medicine uses makhana for its purported tonic and restorative effects. However, scientific evidence supporting Euryale seed's efficacy for leucorrhea is limited. There are a few laboratory studies examining the general pharmacological properties of Euryale seeds, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. Yet, there is a lack of clinical trials or direct scientific studies evaluating its effectiveness specifically for leucorrhea. Most references to its use for this condition are based on traditional practice rather than robust biomedical research. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition (with moderate anecdotal and historical support), current scientific evidence is insufficient to strongly validate its effectiveness for treating leucorrhea.
