Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus pentosus
For the health condition: Leucorrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lactobacillus pentosus has some scientific support for use in managing leucorrhea (abnormal vaginal discharge, often related to bacterial imbalance or infection). L. pentosus is a member of the Lactobacillus genus, which are dominant normal flora in a healthy vagina and contribute to maintaining an acidic pH, thus inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria and yeast. Several clinical studies and reviews have evaluated probiotic strains, including L. pentosus, for their ability to restore vaginal microbiota and alleviate symptoms of bacterial vaginosis and abnormal discharge (which may present as leucorrhea). For instance, a 2019 review discusses the role of L. pentosus in vaginal health and highlights in vitro and limited clinical evidence of its effectiveness in suppressing pathogens and improving symptoms when delivered intravaginally, either alone or in combination with other lactobacilli. However, the clinical evidence specifically targeting leucorrhea as an isolated symptom is limited, with most studies focusing on broader vaginal infections or dysbiosis. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary clinical evidence for using L. pentosus in restoring healthy vaginal flora and potentially treating leucorrhea associated with infections, the evidence base is still emerging and not robust. Larger, high-quality clinical trials specific to leucorrhea are needed to provide stronger support for its use.
