Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bovine gelatin is used as a dietary supplement to support the healing of ligaments, particularly after injury or in conditions involving ligament weakness. The primary justification for its use is scientific, though the strength of evidence is modest (rated 2 out of 5). Gelatin is derived from collagen, a major structural protein in connective tissues including ligaments, tendons, and skin. The rationale is that consuming gelatin provides the body with amino acids—particularly glycine and proline—necessary for collagen synthesis and connective tissue repair. Several small clinical studies and preclinical trials have explored whether gelatin supplementation can enhance collagen production and support joint and ligament health. For example, a 2017 study by Shaw et al. (published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) found that consuming vitamin C-enriched gelatin before exercise increased collagen synthesis in humans. Animal studies have also suggested that gelatin hydrolysates may improve collagen content and mechanical properties of healing ligaments. However, large-scale randomized controlled trials specifically examining gelatin’s effect on ligament healing in humans are lacking. Most evidence is extrapolated from studies on joint health, skin elasticity, or general connective tissue support. Thus, while there is a plausible mechanism and some early evidence, gelatin cannot be considered a definitive treatment for ligament injuries and should not replace standard medical therapies.
