Rating (out of 5): 3

Collagen is a key structural protein in connective tissues, including ligaments, tendons, and skin. Its use for supporting or treating injured ligaments is justified by scientific rationale and growing, though not yet definitive, clinical evidence. Ligaments are composed largely of type I collagen, which gives them strength and flexibility. Injury to a ligament disrupts this collagen matrix; thus, providing supplemental collagen is hypothesized to supply the amino acids and peptides necessary for repair and regeneration. Several animal studies and a limited number of human trials suggest that oral collagen hydrolysate supplementation can increase collagen synthesis and aid recovery from connective tissue injuries. For example, a 2017 randomized controlled trial found that athletes with chronic ankle instability who consumed hydrolyzed collagen experienced improved ankle function and reduced injury recurrence compared to placebo. Other studies have shown modest benefits in tendon and joint health, which are closely related to ligament function. However, while preclinical studies are promising and mechanisms are plausible, robust clinical evidence—particularly large, high-quality trials focused specifically on ligament healing—is still lacking. Most experts agree that collagen supplementation is generally safe and may be beneficial as part of a broader rehabilitation protocol, but it should not be considered a standalone treatment. In summary, scientific interest and preliminary data support the use of collagen for ligament injuries, but more research is needed to establish clear guidelines and efficacy.
