Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hydrolyzed gelatin, also known as collagen hydrolysate, is commonly promoted for joint and connective tissue health, including ligaments. The scientific rationale is that gelatin provides amino acids (notably glycine and proline) that are abundant in collagen, the main structural protein in ligaments. However, direct high-quality clinical evidence for its effectiveness specifically in treating or supporting healing of torn or injured ligaments is limited. Most research has focused on joint pain, osteoarthritis, or general connective tissue support.

Some animal studies suggest that gelatin or collagen supplements may improve collagen synthesis in connective tissues. For example, a small randomized controlled trial in humans (Shaw et al., 2017, AJCN) found that consuming gelatin before exercise increased collagen synthesis in tendons. Extrapolation to ligaments is plausible but not proven. Other studies on athletes have shown modest improvements in joint pain or function, but not specifically ligament healing.

Traditional use of gelatin for "strengthening" tissues dates back centuries, but robust modern clinical trials specifically targeting ligament injury are lacking. Systematic reviews (e.g., Zdzieblik et al., 2021) generally conclude that while collagen supplementation is safe and possibly beneficial for joint health, evidence for ligament injury treatment is weak. In summary, use of hydrolyzed gelatin for ligament injuries has some scientific plausibility and limited supportive evidence, but does not have strong validation for this specific indication.
