Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is a well-studied protein involved in cell proliferation, migration, and tissue repair. In clinical practice, PDGF is often delivered as part of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, which contains a mix of growth factors including PDGF. Several studies have reported improved healing and reduced recovery time in patients with ligament injuries (such as partial tears of the anterior cruciate ligament or ankle ligaments) treated with PRP, though the results are variable and sometimes modest. Some randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses suggest a benefit, but there is also significant heterogeneity in PRP preparation and delivery methods, which complicates interpretation.

Overall, the evidence for direct PDGF or PRP use in ligament healing is promising but not definitive, with most experts agreeing that more high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are necessary. Current guidelines often consider PRP/PDGF as an adjunct rather than a standard therapy, reflecting a moderate level of scientific validation.
