Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Solomon's seal (Polygonatum spp.) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Eastern Europe, Russia, and East Asia. It is commonly employed as a remedy for joint and connective tissue issues, including injured or torn ligaments. Traditional herbalists believe that Solomon's seal helps restore flexibility, supports the body's repair processes, and relieves pain or inflammation associated with musculoskeletal injuries. Folk usage often involves topical applications (salves, poultices) or internal preparations (teas, tinctures).

From a scientific perspective, there is limited direct evidence supporting Solomon's seal for ligament healing. Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and mild analgesic properties in extracts of Polygonatum species, mainly attributed to its saponins, polysaccharides, and flavonoids. However, these findings are preliminary and not specifically tied to ligament healing or regeneration. No high-quality clinical trials have evaluated its efficacy for ligament injuries in humans. As such, the use of Solomon's seal for ligament support remains based on traditional practice rather than scientific validation. The evidence rating reflects the gap between widespread traditional application and the lack of robust modern research.
