Isothiocyanates are a group of phytochemicals primarily found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage. Their use for supporting liver health is based on a growing body of scientific research, particularly in the context of detoxification processes. Isothiocyanates, especially sulforaphane, have been shown in animal and cell studies to induce phase II detoxification enzymes (such as glutathione S-transferases) in the liver. These enzymes play a crucial role in neutralizing and eliminating potentially harmful compounds, including carcinogens and environmental toxins.
Human studies, while more limited, suggest that consumption of cruciferous vegetables can enhance the body's detoxification capacity, at least in part due to isothiocyanates. For example, some clinical trials have found that broccoli sprout extracts can increase the excretion of certain airborne toxins and may modulate markers of oxidative stress.
