Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum, formerly Sophora japonica) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its flower buds, known as "Huai Hua," have been traditionally used to cool the blood, stop bleeding, and support liver health, particularly in the context of “Liver heat” or “Liver fire” syndromes. The traditional rationale is that the plant’s compounds help maintain the integrity of blood vessels, which is relevant in TCM’s approach to liver function, especially for conditions like hemorrhoids or bleeding disorders that are believed to relate to the liver system. However, while some of its flavonoid components, such as rutin and quercetin, have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory research, there is limited direct scientific evidence confirming specific benefits for the liver in humans. Most available studies focus on general antioxidant effects or animal models. Therefore, the use of Pagoda Tree to support the liver is primarily justified by traditional medicine rather than robust clinical or scientific validation.
