Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) has been traditionally used in Japan and other parts of East Asia as a health-promoting herb, and recent scientific studies have begun to explore its effects on liver health and detoxification. The active compounds in ashitaba, particularly chalcones (such as 4-hydroxyderricin and xanthoangelol), exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Preclinical studies (mainly in vitro and animal models) indicate that ashitaba extracts may help protect liver cells from various toxins, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate enzymes involved in liver detoxification pathways. For example, some rodent studies have shown that ashitaba supplementation can decrease markers of liver injury and lipid peroxidation after exposure to hepatotoxic chemicals.

However, evidence in humans is limited and largely extrapolated from animal models or cell studies. There are no large-scale clinical trials directly evaluating ashitaba’s effects on liver detoxification or function in humans. Traditional use and preliminary lab data suggest potential benefits, but the lack of rigorous human studies limits the strength of recommendation. Therefore, while the scientific rationale exists and early evidence is somewhat promising, the current support for ashitaba as a liver detoxification aid is modest.
