Phospholipids are key components of cell membranes, including those of hepatocytes (liver cells), and are involved in membrane repair and regeneration. Several clinical studies, particularly from Eastern Europe and Germany, have investigated the effects of "essential phospholipids" (EPL) in liver diseases such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcoholic liver disease, and toxin-induced liver injury.
Meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials suggest that phospholipid supplementation can improve biochemical markers of liver function (such as transaminases), reduce liver fat content, and may enhance histological outcomes in chronic liver diseases. The proposed mechanisms include stabilization of cell membranes, antioxidant effects, and modulation of inflammatory responses. However, while these findings are promising, the overall quality of evidence is moderate, with some studies showing minimal or no benefit. There is also variability in formulations and dosages used, which complicates comparisons.
