Gum Arabic, a natural exudate from Acacia trees, has been traditionally used for various medicinal purposes, especially in Africa and the Middle East. In recent years, there has been growing scientific interest in its potential health benefits, including effects on liver function and detoxification. Several preclinical (animal) studies and a limited number of clinical trials suggest that Gum Arabic may exert hepatoprotective effects, primarily due to its high fiber content and prebiotic properties. These effects are thought to arise from modulation of gut microbiota, reduction of oxidative stress, and anti-inflammatory actions. For example, a 2012 study in World Journal of Gastroenterology reported that Gum Arabic supplementation reduced markers of liver injury in rats exposed to hepatotoxins. Small human studies, such as one published in 2008 in Liver International, found that Gum Arabic reduced liver enzyme levels in patients with chronic kidney disease, a population at risk for liver dysfunction. However, robust clinical evidence in healthy individuals or those with primary liver disorders remains limited. The evidence base is thus preliminary and warrants further targeted clinical trials. While there is some scientific support for a role in liver health, Gum Arabic should not be considered a primary or standalone therapy for liver detoxification at this time.
