Neem (Azadirachta indica) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for various health conditions, including those related to liver health. In these systems, neem is often considered a "detoxifying" herb, believed to purify the blood and support the function of organs involved in detoxification, such as the liver. Traditional practitioners may use neem extracts, powders, or decoctions as part of broader detoxification regimens or to support liver function, especially when signs of “toxicity” or imbalanced pitta are observed.
From a scientific perspective, preclinical studies (primarily in animals or cell cultures) have suggested that neem possesses hepatoprotective properties. Some studies have shown that neem extracts may help protect liver cells from damage due to toxins or oxidative stress, possibly through antioxidant mechanisms or modulation of certain liver enzymes. For example, animal research has demonstrated that neem leaf or bark extracts can reduce markers of liver injury induced by chemicals such as carbon tetrachloride or paracetamol.
However, direct clinical evidence in humans is limited or lacking, and no large-scale, high-quality human trials have confirmed neem’s efficacy for liver detoxification. Thus, while there is a traditional basis for its use and some preliminary scientific support from preclinical work, the evidence is not robust enough for strong scientific endorsement at this time.
