Ammonium carbonate has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly as a respiratory stimulant and expectorant. Historically, it is the main component of "smelling salts," which have been used since the 14th century to revive people from fainting and to stimulate breathing. Inhalation of its vapors irritates the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, causing reflex stimulation of respiration and coughing. This effect is primarily due to the release of ammonia gas, which can increase respiratory rate and alertness transiently. In the context of supporting the lung or respiratory system, ammonium carbonate was once included in cough syrups and expectorant mixtures, as its irritant properties were thought to help loosen mucus and facilitate its expulsion. However, modern clinical evidence to support its use for lung health is limited, and it is rarely used for this purpose in contemporary medicine due to concerns about toxicity and more effective alternatives. Its historical use provides some justification for its association with respiratory support, but this is not well backed by current scientific research or clinical guidelines.
