Ampelopsis, particularly Ampelopsis grossedentata (commonly known as vine tea or Mao Yan Mei in Traditional Chinese Medicine), has a history of use in traditional Asian medicine for supporting the lungs and respiratory health. In TCM, it has been used to "clear heat," resolve phlegm, and "detoxify," which are believed to benefit respiratory function. However, the traditional use is largely based on empirical observations and documented in herbal texts rather than rigorously controlled clinical trials.

Scientific studies on Ampelopsis have primarily focused on its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, attributed to its high content of dihydromyricetin and other flavonoids.
