Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is supported by scientific evidence for its potential benefits to the lung body system. The justification comes from its high content of glucoraphanin, which is converted in the body to sulforaphane, a compound with known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Several studies have shown that sulforaphane can activate the Nrf2 pathway, which regulates the expression of antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage triggered by inflammation and environmental pollutants, both of which can impact lung function.

Specifically, research has demonstrated that sulforaphane from broccoli can increase the activity of detoxifying enzymes in airway cells, enhancing protection against oxidative stress. A 2009 American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine study found that broccoli sprout extract increased the expression of antioxidant enzymes in the upper airways of human subjects. Additionally, some small clinical studies suggest that broccoli-derived compounds may help reduce symptoms in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma, although results are not yet conclusive and more research is needed.

While broccoli is not a replacement for medical therapy, its regular consumption is associated with general lung health due to its phytochemical profile. Therefore, its use to support the lung body system is scientifically grounded, though the evidence is moderate and primarily based on mechanistic and preliminary human studies rather than large-scale clinical trials.
