European elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has a long history of traditional use in supporting respiratory health, including the lungs. In various European folk medicine traditions, elderberry preparations—such as syrups, teas, and lozenges—have been used to help relieve symptoms of colds, coughs, and other respiratory ailments. The rationale for its use is largely based on its content of flavonoids, anthocyanins, and other polyphenols, which are thought to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties could, in theory, help soothe irritated respiratory mucosa and support the immune response during infections that affect the lungs. However, while elderberry has demonstrated some antiviral activity in laboratory studies, especially against influenza viruses, high-quality clinical trials directly evaluating its impact on lung function or lung-specific conditions (such as asthma, bronchitis, or pneumonia) are lacking.
