Garlic bulb (Allium sativum) has a long history of traditional use for supporting respiratory health, particularly in systems of traditional medicine such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, where it is believed to "open the lungs" and help with conditions like coughs and bronchitis. Modern scientific research offers some support for these traditional uses. Garlic contains organosulfur compounds such as allicin, which have demonstrated antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties in vitro and in animal studies. These properties suggest potential benefits for respiratory tract infections and general lung health.

Some small clinical studies and meta-analyses indicate that garlic supplementation may reduce the incidence and severity of the common cold, which primarily affects the upper respiratory tract. However, evidence specifically targeting long-term lung health or chronic respiratory diseases (e.g., asthma, COPD) is limited and not conclusive. Most human studies focus on immune enhancement rather than direct effects on lung tissue or lung function. Thus, while there is a plausible biological basis and some preliminary clinical data, robust, large-scale clinical trials are lacking.
