Lebbek (Albizia lebbeck), also known as siris or Indian siris, is traditionally used in Ayurveda and other systems of traditional medicine to support respiratory health, particularly the lungs. In Ayurveda, the bark and seeds of Lebbek are considered to have expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic properties. They are used to treat conditions like asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory complaints. Texts such as the Charaka Samhita mention the use of Lebbek for “Shvasa” (breathlessness) and cough.
Scientific research on Lebbek’s effects on the lungs is limited but does provide some preliminary support. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated anti-asthmatic, anti-inflammatory, and antihistaminic effects from various extracts of Lebbek, which may help alleviate symptoms of respiratory conditions. A few studies have suggested that Lebbek bark extract can inhibit histamine-induced bronchoconstriction in animal models, supporting its traditional use in asthma. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most of the evidence remains preclinical or anecdotal.
In summary, the use of Lebbek to support the lungs is primarily justified by traditional use, with a modest amount of scientific support from animal and laboratory studies, but insufficient high-quality clinical research to strongly validate its effectiveness for lung health.
