Lycopene is a carotenoid pigment found predominantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables. Its primary recognized role is as an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress. There is emerging, but limited, scientific evidence suggesting lycopene may benefit the lungs. Some epidemiological studies have observed associations between higher dietary lycopene intake and better lung function or reduced risk of certain lung diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). For example, a few cohort studies report that people with higher tomato or lycopene consumption have slightly improved measures of lung function or a slower decline in lung function over time. The proposed mechanism is thought to relate to lycopene's antioxidant properties, which may help protect lung tissue from damage due to environmental pollutants and inflammation.

However, intervention trials directly supplementing lycopene and assessing lung health are scarce, and results are inconsistent. Most of the available research is observational and thus cannot prove causation. Additionally, lycopene is not traditionally used in herbal or folk medicine for lung health, and no major medical guidelines currently recommend lycopene specifically for lung support. In summary, while there is some scientific basis for the idea that lycopene may help support lung health, the evidence is preliminary and not robust. This justifies a modest evidence rating.
