Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine systems, particularly for supporting the respiratory system, including the lungs. In both Western herbalism and traditional practices such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Maidenhair Fern has been used as an expectorant and demulcent to help soothe irritation in the respiratory tract and promote the clearance of mucus. Historical texts such as Dioscorides’ De Materia Medica and medieval European herbals mention its use for coughs, hoarseness, and other lung-related complaints. The traditional preparation is often as a tea or syrup.
