Silver Fir (Abies alba) has a traditional use in supporting the respiratory system, including the lungs. In European folk medicine, extracts and essential oils from Silver Fir needles and twigs have been used for centuries to address respiratory complaints such as coughs, bronchitis, and congestion. The essential oil, often inhaled or used in balms, is believed to act as an expectorant and to soothe the airways, likely due to its content of volatile compounds like alpha-pinene and limonene. These compounds are shared with other conifers such as pine, which also have traditional uses in respiratory health.

However, direct scientific studies specifically validating Silver Fir’s effects on human lung health are lacking. Some in vitro and animal studies on related conifer oils suggest mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which may explain the traditional use for respiratory complaints.
