Triterpene saponins are a class of naturally occurring compounds found in various plants, such as licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), ginseng (Panax ginseng), and astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus). In traditional medicine systems, especially Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), plants rich in triterpene saponins have been used historically to support lung health. For example, licorice root and astragalus are commonly included in herbal formulas to "tonify the lungs," address cough, or support respiratory function. The use of such herbs is well documented in classical texts, with the belief that they can soothe the respiratory tract, reduce phlegm, and enhance the body's resistance to illness.
Scientifically, there is limited direct evidence that triterpene saponins themselves, as isolated constituents, have specific effects on the human lung system. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that certain triterpene saponins may possess anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, or anti-viral properties, which could theoretically benefit respiratory health. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence supporting their use for lung health is based on traditional use rather than modern scientific validation.
